Chief Meteorologist
NEWS4 Chief Meteorologist, Jeff Thompson's Introduction

Life grows where water flows. It is a resource that has always been more valuable than gold in the West, shaping our history and in many ways, determining our future. As Nevada and California populations continue to grow out of control, this already limited lifeblood is becoming stretched to depletion.

Winter snows deposit the water supply we need throughout the year on the beautiful peaks of the Sierra Nevada. As winter melts into spring and summer, this supply flows from a trickle to a roar in the Truckee, Carson, and Walker rivers, and fills the pristine jewel of Lake Tahoe. Our future challenge comes as this precious fixed amount of water is asked to serve a growing population with growing needs for drinking, irrigation, agriculture, and recreation.

The News 4 Weather Plus Weather Team is Watching Out 4 You with our “Water Wise” program. This program was coordinated by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and championed by Nevada Division of Environmental Protection as a way to bring high-quality watershed education to Nevadans. This valuable resource will provide a wealth of water information including: the location of your watershed, snow pack measurements, river and lake levels, and a host of conservation tips and facts to help everyone do their part to keep our water flowing and clean.

We hope that you enjoy this valuable tool, and are able to use this information to better protect and enjoy this precious natural resource.
